Independence Day a time to rejoice as Indians

At midnight on August 14th 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru gave his now famous speech, ‘Awake to freedom’ “Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes which comes rarely in history, when we step from old to new, then an age ends, and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance”.  The next morning on 15th August 1947 we were finally free from British rule when Jawaharlal Nehru raised the tri-colour from the Red Fort.

However, as we are entering the 68th year of our independence we all should step back and think have we really become free or we have just become physically free and mentally we are still enslaved to the ideals of the west. Have we really become independent as a society? Have we as Indians created a unique identity for the world to see and admire?

One of the dreams that our founding fathers had was to see a self-reliant strong, independent and a country with its own identity, however even today what we see is that we are blindly aping west not  their good attributes but aping the western brands and the lifestyle choices they make. I reality if anything we should be aping their focus on innovations and research and creating companies like Microsoft or Google, we should be aping European countries like France or Italy, the way the preserve their language you would rarely see them speaking in English unless required to whereas we feel ashamed to speak in our mother tongue, while there is nothing wrong in English it should be used when needed, whereas our mother tongue is the heart of this wonderful nation.

The country is symbolized with rampant corruption, violence against women, and intolerance towards each other as human beings. Greed has become the prime factor nowadays. However harsh it may sound but this is reality of today. What we want is the India that our forefathers dreamt it to be liked, tolerant, corruption free, where multi language and multi cultures all merge as one.

So on this Independence Day let us all sit down and think as citizens of India how we will make all efforts to make this country the way our founding fathers envisaged it to be and if we can build that India, that will be the day we will be truly free.

Happy Independence Day to All
